    This paper presents data from a qualitative study of urban high school students that asked students to reflect on the experiences of their lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and questioning peers. The focus group participants wrote letters to an imaginary new student at their school, discussed what they see and hear in their schools, and kept journals recording a week's worth of observations. …

  2. Achieving real equality: a work in progress for LGBT youth in Spain

    Although lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people have achieved a great level of legal equality in Spain, social equality is still to come, especially for adolescents. This article reports results from three different studies. The first, in 2005, using a multidisciplinary approach, confirmed that homophobia is present in secondary schools in Madrid. The second, in 2006, was a small survey of LGBT teenagers' on-line postings and internet interviews; and the third, conducted in 2007, analyzed more than 4500 questionnaires completed by high school student in two Spanish towns. …

  3. The 2009 national school climate survey: the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth in our nation's schools

    In our 2009 survey, we examine the experiences of LGBT students with regard to indicators of negative school climate: hearing biased remarks, including homophobic remarks, in school; feeling unsafe in school because of personal characteristics, such as sexual orientation, gender expression, or race/ethnicity; missing classes or days of school because of safety reasons; and experiences of harassment and assault in school. We also examine the possible negative effects of a hostile school climate on LGBT students' academic achievement, educational aspirations, and psychological well-being. …

    This Six Cities Scanning Initiative Implementation Guide describes the methodology for inquiry and analysis used in a Six Cities Scanning Initiative undertaken by UNDP in the Asia Pacific region in 2010.     Competent allocation of recourses is a key factor for success in any development program. This Brief explores the issues related to men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender (TG) through addressing approaches for estimating numbers of MSM and TGs in a certain region or country.
