‘Commitment to sustainable water stewardship at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture’

GFA

One of the major global challenges of the twenty-first century is to ensure the sustainable use of water. Water consumption has roughly tripled over the last 50 years, while estimates suggest that by 2050 the demand for food will be 60% higher. Only with sufficient water supplies can agriculture ensure sufficient food supplies for a growing population.

With the eye on this, 84 Ministries of Agriculture from all over the world attended the 2017 Global Forum for Food and Agriculture, the largest conference of agriculture ministers in the world, which took place in Berlin, Germany, on 19-21 January 2017. The conference focused on the topic “Agriculture and Water – Key to Feeding the World”, and aimed at adopting an ambitious communiqué on a sustainable management of water resources.

During the conference, WWAP Coordinator, Mr Uhlenbrook, was invited to co-facilitate one of the four break-out-sessions organized on ‘Access to Water’, ‘Water Scarcity’, ‘Water Surplus’ and ‘Water Quality in collaboration with the Ministers for Agriculture of Australia HE Barnaby. The aim of these sessions was to discuss common challenges related to implementation and share solutions that might be applicable across countries.
