The debate of delivering HIV and AIDS education within schools is a sensitive topic that often elicits strong feelings from parents, teachers and school administrators. Shrouded in misconceptions that teaching HIV and AIDS education promotes premature sexual debut, many schools shy away from covering HIV and AIDS lessons except for in the context of biological health or natural science class. Using data collected from 3645 sexually active grade 6 and 7 students from 160 schools and applying hierarchical linear models, this study estimates the impact of individual, school and community level variables on condom use among sexually experienced young people in Nyanza, Kenya. Based on the findings, the document recommends that AIDS prevention interventions take account not only of individual-level factors, but also school and community influences on the sexual behaviours of youth.
