  3. Facing the HIV/AIDS Pandemic

We are entering the third decade of what may be the most devastating epidemic in human history: HIV/AIDS. The disease continues to ravage families, communities, and countries throughout the world. In addition to the 20 million people who have already died of AIDS, most of the 40 million people now living with HIV are likely to die a decade or more prematurely. Each day, 14,000 people-12,000 adults and 2,000 children-become infected with HIV. At least 95 percent of these new infections occur in less developed countries; more than 50 percent afflict women and young adults. …

Limited information was available from the Maldives, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, and none was available from Bhutan. Most research has taken place in India, so this synthesis is somewhat weighted toward that country. …

  5. Evolution comparée de la mortalité des jeunes agés en situation d'ajustement structurel dans les pays d'Afrique subsaharienne

This study examines trends in infant mortality in Africa after the independence era up to 1990 and searches for a possible link with Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs). It appears in this study that three decades after independence, infant mortality has shown a downward trend with a few exceptions. The macroeconomic analysis was unable to reveal an influence of SAPs on this phenomenon during the period. However, several factors including socio-political crises can induce drastically the upsurge of infant mortality.
