The UNESCO project "Empowering Local Radio with ICTs" built the capacity of 32 local radios in 7 African countries, from 2012 until end of 2014. Due to its success the project has been scaled-up for a second phase to benefit a further 27 local radio stations in Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda; until 2018.

The “Empowering Local Radio with ICTs” project aims to raise the diversity and inclusiveness of community radio stations through the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The overall goal is to improve the lives of the poor, especially women and girls, by raising local radio stations' quality programming. Mirta Lourenço, Chief of the Section for Media Development at UNESCO, says "UNESCO helps local radios acquire ICT skills, achieve an increased range of local news coverage as well as gender equality and financial sustainability". By the end of the project, local radios will be able to provide better social service and engage different sectors of the community in the debate of issues of local public concern.

This project is possible thanks to the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
