Poor language skills and the lack of access to computers are two central challenges in the area of ICT training of teachers in Cambodia. To address these and other problems, the UNESCO Office in Phnom Penh has conducted extensive training of trainers workshops during the past months and now plans to train additional 400 teacher trainers in the use of ICT.
The training courses were organized within the framework of the project "Establishing the Effective Use of ICT in Education for All in Cambodia". In May 2003, a training course was organized for those who already had basic ICT skills. At least one teacher trainer from each college in the country attended. The trainees were expected to pass on their skills to their peers as well as train their students in ICT.

More recently, in August, the Teacher Training Department in Phnom Penh is preparing to use some of the trainers trained in May to train 400 teacher trainers in the use of ICT with an envisaged total of 16 days training for each person.

Training will be conducted in Kandal and Kompong Cham. The first 8 days will be on basic ICT skills and the second 8 days on using ICT to improve teaching and learning. The UNESCO team is currently preparing resources in Khmer for the course, with the view of providing a CD-ROM of teaching/learning resources. Pacific Tech donated a Graphic Calculator for Windows and is now searching for other free educational software from the Internet that is not too dependent on language.
