Beijing Workshop Develops Guidelines on Teacher Training in ICT Integration

Bringing together Asia-Pacific's leading experts in technology-enhanced teacher training, UNESCO Bangkok recently held a workshop on "Development of Guidelines on Teacher Training in ICT Integration and Standards for Competency" that was held from 27 to 29 September 2003 in Beijing, China.
Organised by the Asia Pacific Programme of Educational Innovation for Development (APEID), the meeting marked the beginning of the project "Training and Professional Development of Teachers and Other Facilitators for Effective Use of ICT in Improving Teaching and Learning".
The project is focused on professional development, building on the capacities of teachers, policy-makers, school headmasters, technology supporters and providers, amongst others. It attempts to find alternative strategies in integrating ICT in the teaching-learning processes and at tapping the potential of ICT to enrich learning through new technologies.
The outputs of the workshop were threefold. Firstly, a regional guideline and conceptual curriculum framework were developed for teachers, to help them integrating ICT within education for improved teaching and learning. Secondly, competency-based standards were outlined, which can be adapted to national contexts as references in ICT training modules. Finally, participants developed a detailed plan for adaptation and development of teacher training modules through a team approach for capacity building in technology-pedagogy integration through 'training of trainers' workshops at national and regional levels.
As the nature and scale of the project necessitates multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary team work, experts were chosen from various countries and organisations, with expertise and experience in ICT in education projects, technology-oriented trainers programmes, educational technology standards, production of multi-media teacher training materials, and ICT provision for educational purposes.
The project of which this meeting is a part runs under the Japanese Funds-in-Trust programme to promote the use of ICT for expanded access to quality education for all.
