  • Workshop at the IRIB University in Tehran

During the first week of December 2008, UNESCO, the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) and the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting agency (IRIB) joined in a one-week training session in Tehran for TV reporting on HIV/AIDS issues.

In a continuation of previous co-operation between the UNESCO Communication and Information (CI) programme and AIBD, the two organizations partnered in this initiative to promote HIV/AIDS awareness in Iran.

The workshop took place at the IRIB University in Tehran, with AIBD trainers engaging Iranian television producers on HIV/AIDS issues. 14 Iranian men and women from the national broadcasting agency attended the workshop at the IRIB University. They debated and evaluated best practices for HIV/AIDS reporting and planned future programmes aimed at the Iranian public.

In the global fight against HIV/AIDS, one of the most effective means to reduce HIV prevalence is to equip young people with the knowledge they need to protect themselves. Television programmes have the ability to reach this audience with a powerful message. However, as emphasized in the AIBD standards for HIV Communication, the entire ethical, social and psychological aspects of the disease must be addressed for effective and responsible reporting on HIV/AIDS. Good reporting gives accurate information and shows a human face to the pandemic, without stigmatizing HIV infected people. The workshop equipped IRIB producers to start working on their own programme initiatives based on this common approach.
