UNESCO Concluded Series of Workshops with IRIB and ABU

UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office (UTCO) has concluded four workshops in partnership Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) with Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) acting as the host. The total four workshops that started from first week of July and ended on 21 July 2011, has invited around 80 broadcasters from IRIB. Each workshop was attended by a different group of participants.
The first workshops was on Conflict Sensitive Reporting, organized from 2-6 July 2011 by Mr. Peter Tygesen, a Danish expert in the field of conflict resolving and media training in covering conflicts. This 5-day workshop was attended by 16 participants, during which they were introduced to basic theories about conflict comprehension and practical guidance on how to interpret and navigate in conflictive environments and situations.

The second workshop was on Video Journalism, took place from 9 to 13 July 2011. The primary objective of the video journalism training workshop was aimed at getting both Tehran and provincial based reporters to immerse themselves in both creative script writing as well as the technical aspects of news production. The trainer for this workshop was Mr. Augustine Anthuvan, a Senior Editor in the News Department of MediaCorp, Singapore. Due to the high interest in this particular Workshop the initial 5-day format was modified in two two and a half days workshops to accommodate the high demand for such training. Each workshop had 18 students from IRIB Headquarters in Tehran and the IRIB provincial centres.

The second workshop was organised almost back to back with the workshop on Internet and New Media, 9-11 July, attended by 46 participants with by Mr. Holger Banko, the IT Manager of the AIBD acted as the trainer. The top management of IRIB joined the first session of the workshop which focused on the latest trends in the field – technology, important news, broadcaster methods, new technical concepts and so on. The other sessions demonstrated the best practices in BBC and CNN in action and theory and introduced the procedures, functions, roles, software, hardware and services provided by the new platforms.

The final workshop was TV News Production workshop, that run from 18 to 21 July 2011, conducted by John Cokley, a lecturer in Media and Communications with the Queensland University in Australia. There were over 20 participants attended this workshop, and during which they acquired new skills on news production, including the final assignment of producing one and a-half minutes news item for each of the participant.

In his remarks delivered during his visit to the workshop on 20 July, Mr. Arya Gunawan Usis, Advisor for Communication and Information of UTCO, praised the partnerships among UTCO, ABU and IRIB, that has resulted in this series of useful workshops which strengthen the capacity of IRIB’s broadcasters. UTCO is also looking forward to future collaboration, including other workshops on different subjects such as reporting on natural disasters or on climate change issues. The plan to explore and design further training workshop within the framework of partnership with UTCO, with support from other organizations, is also welcome by Dr. Mahmoud Arbabi, Head of IRIB Training Centre.
