Cultural diversity is recognized as a key vector in the sustainable development of peoples and societies. The Culture Programme of the UNESCO Office in Tehran places emphasis on a holistic approach to the protection and safeguarding of cultural heritage in all its forms, tangible and intangible.

To contribute to the system-wide efforts towards the sustainable management and utilization of natural and cultural resources, the Office has adopted the following strategic objectives:

  • To promote the drafting and implementation of standard-setting instruments in the field of Culture.

  • To safeguard cultural diversity and to encourage dialogue among cultures and civilizations.

  • To enhance the linkages between culture and development, through capacity-building and sharing of knowledge.

    Areas of intervention:

  • To promote the development of crafts and cultural industries at the international level: Co-organization of a Roundtable of International Experts on Handicraft Marketing & Design Protection with Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicraft and Tourism Organization [ICHHTO], 4 October 2008, Esfahan, I.R. of Iran.

    To promote the development of crafts and cultural industries for the region: Co-organization of the 2008 Sub-Regional Jury Session of the UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicraft, 5~7 October 2008, Esfahan, I.R. of Iran. Co-organizers: Iranian Cultural Heritage, Handicraft and Tourism Organization [ICHHTO], UNESCO Office in Almaty , Central Asian Crafts Support Association [CACSA], UNESCO Regional Office for Education in Bangkok, UNESCO Office in Kabul.

  • To promote the development of crafts and cultural industries in I.R. of Afghanistan & I.R. of Iran: Co-organizing a Training for Future Jury Members for the UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicraft Programme, 8 October 2008, Esfahan, I.R. of Iran.

  • To build capacity of Afghan professionals in the field of urban heritage conservation: Training Course on Conservation of Cultural Heritage: Challenges in an Urbanizing Environment, 27 June - 4 July 2008, I.R. of Iran. Co-organized with Shahid Beheshti University's Faculty of Architecture & Urban Planning, Afghan Ministry of Culture, UNESCO Office in Kabul.

  • Translation, publication & dissemination of the Farsi language version of the 2008 Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention.

  • Publication and dissemination of the Quadrilingual Basic Terminology of the World Heritage Convention (Arabic, English, Farsi, French.

  • Undertaking a nation-wide Museum Survey in the I.R. of Iran for planning museum management capacity building needs.

  • Supporting enhanced planning and management of World Heritage properties (currently there are two World Heritage properties in I.R. of Afghanistan, three in Turkmenistan, six in Pakistan and nine in the I.R. of Iran).

  • Capacity-building for integrated conservation and management of cultural heritage with emphasis on Bam and its Cultural Landscape and Chogha Zanibl World Heritage properties, notably through three large-scale UNESCO Funds-in-Trust from the donor countries Italy & Japan.

  • Supporting pilot activities for conservation of select World Heritage properties.

  • Promoting dialogue on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

  • Supporting pilot activities for linking tangible and intangible culture.
