Peintre, dessinateur, graveur, architecte, Lambert Lombard est avant tout un grand artiste et chercheur humaniste qui a importé l'italianisme aux Pays-Bas, notamment en créant, à Liège, une école artistique fondée sur l'expérience de l'atelier que Baccio Bandinelli avait fondé au Vatican et dénommé académie. Peintre attitré des princes-évêques de Liège, il a joué dans la Renaissance un rôle de précurseur. Ses dessins sont d'une qualité et d'une profusion exceptionnelles. Lombard est non seulement l'un des artistes les plus doués de son temps, mais aussi un érudit : numismatique, littérature, mythologie et beaux-arts constituent ses domaines de travail et d'étude. Lambert Lombard est ainsi un archétype de l'intellectuel de la Renaissance.
