REGIONAL CELEBRATION OF THE GLOBAL ACTION WEEK Equal Right, Equal Opportunity – Khomas Region, 17th July 2014

UNESCO participated with the Ministry of Education and Regional Council in launching Global Action Week at Eldorado Secondary School in Windhoek. The theme was dedicated to Education and Disability, and the Khomas Governor, Honourable Ms L. Mcleod-Katjirua, delivered the key note address, expressing her emotions of gratitude for being able to attend such an important event and underlining the importance of Education for All, and the Government’s commitment in achieving the right to quality education for all the children of Namibia.

Among the participants were the representatives of the Institute of Open Learning, the Directorate of Education and UNESCO’s representative whose remarks focused on the priority of breaking down barriers for people with disabilities, to empower them as agents of change, and shared UNESCO’s continuous efforts and commitment in working towards this goal.
The commemoration began with very inspiring and passionate words of a youth pastor who addressed the children and young people present calling on them to make education their priority in life as it is the launching pad to build a better nation and encouraged them to follow their aspirations and see education as the light that gives vision into a new future, individually and as a society.
The event was enriched by the presence of many teachers and the joyous and enthusiastic participation of learners from various schools, among which hearing and visually impaired children, who shared songs, dances and drama sketches, and who created a moving and animated atmosphere, confirming that they are not children with disabilities, but with different and indeed extraordinary abilities.
