Elu par la Conférence générale, le Conseil exécutif est l'un des trois organes constitutionnels de l'UNESCO.
Il se compose de 58 Etats membres dont le mandat est de quatre ans. Chaque Etat membre désigne un représentant et peut également désigner des suppléants.
