Renovation of Room I

Room I is currently undergoing an unprecedented restoration and will be unveiled in early 2017.  The renovated Room I offers improved comfort, acoustics and capacity, completely revamped and modernized equipment and improved security and safety features, all while returning Room I to the spirit of its iconic original 1958 design.  

In the meantime, stay up to date here with all the news and progress, meet the people behind the restoration, and discover the history, facts and defining moments of Room I.

January 2017 : Room I will soon be finished within the initial planning and budget.

In the meantime, during the last stages of formal transfer of responsibilities from enterprises to UNESCO, which are currently underway,It is formally forbidden for anyone, beyond worksite staff, to visit the room for technical and insurance-responsibility reasons.  

The room will reopen beginning March 2017.

The New Room I - Images of the new design

Now and over the next months, until the end of 2016, heavy and potentially noisy works will be carried out in Room I. Access to some parts of the underground floor around the Mall is also blocked. These factors should be kept in mind by staff with regards to activities or events planned in the vicinity of Room I. For further queries please contact e.livingstone@unesco.org.
