The UNESCO Dakar Office will organize a short training course on data acquisition and data quality for the management of underground water systems for 3 members of the G5 countries (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger) in the Sahel region.
For the efficient management of water resources in the drylands of the Sahel prone to droughts, floods, desertification and other climate variability including impacts of conflicts and migration, it is important that planners and managers of water resources have a complete view of available water resources in other to plan for emergencies and to build resilience in communities living within these areas. The workshop will contribute to strengthening the capacities of member states in acquiring quality data from aquifer systems within their domains and from shared transboundary resources which can then be added to existing surface water data for more holistic management of water resources in the region. This activity will contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Integrated Sahel Strategy (UNISS) where UNESCO leads the thematic group on transboundary water management.
