Workshop for all staff of Syrian refugee secondary schools in Kurdistan Iraq

Within the framework of the Japanese funded project 'Expanding Secondary Education for Syrian Refugees in Iraq', a workshop that on contextualized technical and pedagogical approaches will be held for all managerial/administrative and teaching staff of Syrian refugee secondary schools in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).
The workshop will be conducted by education specialists in mastery of subject matter – both managerial/administrative for head teachers and technical for teachers - together with effective teaching methods; sessions on community engagement, and safe and stimulating schools will be included.

The workshop is relevant not only as school staff work with a new curriculum (KRI curricula as opposed to Syrian curricula), but also as (according to information available from the schools) less than half of the teachers have a degree in the subject that they teach and more than two years of experience as teachers; only a quarter have teaching qualifications. In addition to motivation, rest and recuperation, a key objective is creation of communities of practice between schools, and with supervisors and representatives of the departments of education. Given the isolation of the schools in camp settings as well as limited capacity of the Ministry of Education (MOE) to organize supervision support in light of the financial crisis, this is especially important.

Outcomes of the workshop are expected to be implemented and followed up starting with remedial classes to be offered by the schools in the summer period.
