UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP) has been providing a scientific networking platform in order to contribute to the assessment and monitoring of changes in snow, glaciers and water resources. The platform also aims at raising awareness of policy-makers at the national, regional and international level on the predictions and risks related to these changes. UNESCO IHP is coordinating and talking lead to organize ‘Water Resources Session’ during the World Mountain Forum from 23-24 May 2014 in Cusco, Peru. Water Resources Session will gather scientists, water managers, policy-makers and other stakeholders to share experiences, views and recommendations for coping with climate change impacts on water resources in mountainous areas.
The heterogeneity and complex geophysical structure of mountain regions pose challenges to mountain research, and many knowledge gaps remain. There is an urgent need for enhanced monitoring and modeling of climate change impacts in mountain regions, to increase the understanding of these impacts on water resources, and to further develop sustainable adaption strategies. The World Mountain Forum is being organized Government of Peru in partnership with UNESCO (IHP), together with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS), the Centre for Development and Environment of the University of Bern (CDE), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and other stakeholders.
