Living Together

© UNESCO / Rajneesh Bhandari

Globalization, urbanization and cultural diversity are creating multicultural societies, where women and men have multiple identities.

I believe rising diversity compels us to rethink how to dialogue between and within societies and cultures, and to craft new forms of active tolerance, to strengthen social cohesion. Learning to live together has never been so important for inclusive development, and for lasting peace.

This is my core call for a new humanism. Solidarity must be embodied in new forms of global citizenship in an era of diversity. This calls for new approaches to fostering cultural literacy and to safeguarding the shared heritage of humanity.

We need to learn how to embrace the rich diversity of humanity while uniting around universal values and human rights on the basis of mutual understanding and respect.
