WWAP participates to the European Development Days

How can sustainable water management enable the creation of decent jobs and the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?

WWAP will take part to the European Development Days (EDD) and organize together with the European Commission's Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DEVCO), a session on 'The central role of water for inclusive and sustainable growth and the creation of decent jobs'.

The session will address the linkages between water management and job creation within the context of inclusive and sustainable growth including a circular economy. The most important findings of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2016 and 2017 on, respectively, ‘Water and Jobs’, and ‘Wastewater: The Untapped Resource”, will be presented and put in perspective to other socioeconomic phenomena such as migration and youth unemployment. Water is a key element in the creation of jobs either in sectors directly related or in water-dependent sectors: 3 out of 4 jobs worldwide are water-dependent. Water stress and the lack of decent work can contribute to distress migration. A thorough understanding and related policy implementation are crucial to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
