UNESCO launches new programme to strengthen voices of Pakistani women

To strengthen voices and opinions of Pakistani women through new media technologies and online journalism, UNESCO is developing a course, and will conduct training and capacity building workshops for media education trainers from the Fatimah Jinnah Women University (FJWU).
UNESCO had earlier signed a memorandum of understanding with FJWU, the first South-Asian campus and community radio with women producers and journalists, to launch the new programme. Specifically trained instructors will build a cadre of future journalists and content generators, who will actively use digital media technologies in raising their voices on issues impacting gender equality.
Entitled ‘New Media and Online Journalism Programme’, this UNESCO initiative is going to be offered to Master’s students of the Department of Mass Communication at FJWU. This unique course aims not only to train young women journalists in digital tools to produce news content, but also to enable them to express their views about global and internal gender issues. It is specifically based on the Global Gender Gap Index and Millennium Development Goal 3 (Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women), and eventually aims at opening a spectrum of ideas and tools to help Pakistani women contribute to the Media Development Indicators.
This initiative will result in consolidating the opinions and presence of Pakistani women on the Internet as a force for economic opportunities, social change, political awareness and gender empowerment.
UNESCO will also establish an online portal to serve as a platform for university students to share their opinions.
