Sources of the History of Africa
The first stages (1965 to 1969) of the General History of Africa consisted in gathering documentation and planning the work. Several meetings were held and campaigns conducted in the field to collect oral traditions and establish regional documentation centres. In addition, the following activities were undertaken: collection of unpublished manuscripts in Arabic and Ajami (manuscripts in African languages written with Arabic alphabet), compilation of archival inventories and preparation of a Guide to the Sources of the History of Africa, culled from the archives and libraries of a number of European countries and later published in nine volumes.
