Varicose veins are among the most frequent health problems that affect the majority of the elderly population around 50 years old or more, although sometimes people of all ages may develop them as the result of their lifestyle and some other health related issues. They are most common in women although it is not rare that men suffer from this problem too.
Most people who develop varicose veins are primarily concerned with the appearance of their legs or other parts of the body where these veins may develop although they usually appear in the lower legs. In such cases, people care what they are going to wear, and they may not want to wear clothing that will show the unattractive skin of their legs. However, there is more in varicose veins that people may think and for some people, they can be much more than simply an aesthetic problem, and they may indicate a serious medical issue.
Are Varicose Veins Dangerous?
So, are varicose veins dangerous? The answer to this question can be both yes and no. A large number of studies and researches show that most varicose veins are benign which means that they are not so dangerous and certainly not life-threatening. They are often itchy and a little bit painful especially after long walking or standing. Other symptoms that are most common are heavy feeling in legs, particularly at night and after exercising, cramping and aching and although these symptoms does not necessarily mean that you will have to see your doctor or dermatologist immediately, it is desirable that you pay them a visit and listen to what they have to say about your veins and how can you treat them to reduce the unpleasant feeling that they cause and improve the appearance of your legs.
In other cases, varicose veins may turn out to be by far a more serious problem, and they may lead to the inflammation of the skin and veins that may allow pooled blood inside the veins to clot and form a thrombus. It is also a painful problem that manifests itself in the form of a hard and tender lump on the leg. This condition is known to be crucial for the appearance of the more serious deep vein thrombosis where these clots that were mentioned can extend into the deep vein system and they can in some extreme cases break loose from the veins and travel to other bodily parts and become life-threatening. Such cases require immediate medical attention and treatment.
How Can Varicose Veins Be Prevented or Treated?
There are certain things you can do to prevent the formation of varicose veins or stop them from getting even worse, and these are, avoiding crossing your legs while you are seating, eating healthy food, regular exercising, wearing various support socks, etc. Various medical treatments such as laser surgeries prove to be the most efficient in varicose vein treatment and they do not only eliminate all painful and dangerous symptoms, but they also improve the appearance of your legs and your self-confidence.
