Joint Inspection Unit of the United Nations System commends UNESCO’s results
The Joint Inspection Unit of the United Nations System (JIU) has recently published a “Review of the acceptance and implementation of the JIU recommendations by UNESCO”, indicating that UNESCO is one of the top performers among 28 JIU organizations.
According to the review, UNESCO can demonstrate an 81.9 percent acceptance rate and a 90.4 % implementation rate which places the Organization well above the system-wide average of 64% and 80.4% respectively.
The author of the report, Inspector Jorge Flores Callejas, commended UNESCO for these positive results. The JIU expressed their desire to see more discussion of JIU reports by the Executive Board and that UNESCO should periodically brief the Executive Board on the status of JIU recommendations.
UNESCO Secretariat fully concurs with these recommendations and will aim at presenting two highly relevant recent JIU reports, on fraud awareness and human resources succession planning, in upcoming Executive Board sessions.
“UNESCO is committed to ensuring effective results from JIU’s work, and the Secretariat will coordinate with UNESCO’s legislative bodies to seek, on their agenda, a standing item on JIU reports,” declared the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.
The Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) of the United Nations System is the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system mandated to conduct evaluations, inspections and investigations system-wide.
