Intersectoral collaboration is needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). How the health and education sectors in particular can develop stronger working partnerships will be the theme of an international seminar to be held at the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in Hamburg, Germany, on 15 May 2017. Hosted by UIL, the seminar will bring together leading education and health experts from academia, government, NGOs and multilateral organizations, including UNESCO and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The seminar will be a valuable opportunity to take stock of the latest research and case studies on the links between adult learning and education (ALE) and health, including the third Global Report on Adult Learning and Education (GRALE III). Participants will identify best practices as well as barriers to intersectoral cooperation, and discuss how to promote more integrated policies and programmes. They will also identify research and data gaps, and consider how to collaborate to fill those gaps.

Specific attention will be given to:

- examples/case studies that illustrate the relationship between ALE and health/well-being;

- possible research topics for ALE/health-related issues;

- indicators related to ALE and health, which may be integrated into the upcoming GRALE IV survey.

Through this seminar, UIL seeks to contribute to the implementation of:

  • the Recommendation on Adult Learning and Education (2015), which highlights the role of ALE in helping people lead a decent life, including in terms of health and well-being;
  • the Belém Framework for Action (2009), which sees ALE as a valuable investment that brings social benefits, including by creating more healthy societies;
  • the Education 2030: Incheon Declaration and Framework for Action (2015), which states that quality education develops the skills, values and attitudes that enable citizens to lead healthy and fulfilled lives.
