Fostering Freedom of Expression

© UNESCO Juba
South Sudan Investment Conference, December 2013

UNESCO promotes the free flow of ideas by word and image around the world.

Media development enhances freedom of expression, contributing to peace, sustainability, poverty eradication and human rights.

As secretariat to South Sudan’s Media Sector Working Group, we are fostering free, independent and pluralistic media.

We conducted an assessment of the media landscape in South Sudan to inform development initiatives.

UNESCO promotes policies for press freedom and the safety of journalists -- South Sudan is one of the pilot countries for implementation of the UN Plan of Action on Safety of Journalists and the issue of impunity. UNESCO also supports independent journalism based on professional ethics and self-regulatory principles.

Having a wide range of media ensures that people have choices. We also have initiatives in media and information literacy and journalism education while promoting gender equity in the media in South Sudan.

UNESCO’s work in all these areas is part of our support for freedom of expression as set down in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Our activities target:

  • Press Freedom
  • Media Development
  • Safety of Journalists
