Regional workshop on Tentative Listing for East African Countries, Juba, September 2012

As a new State Party, South Sudan is facing teething problems that any new government goes through. The country has not ratified the World Heritage Convention yet, but the process is already underway with the assistance of UNESCO Juba Office.

South Sudan has no history of surveys and inventories for heritage and lacks both technical and financial resources to spearhead heritage projects.

Heritage legislation is still being developed and its finalisation is being slowed down by procedural processes.

As part of the ongoing process of identifying world heritage sites, UNESCO Juba supported an important event for the region:

Regional Forum for World Heritage Sites, Juba

UNESCO joined with the African World Heritage Fund to hold the Regional Forum on the Harmonization and Updating of Tentative Lists for World Heritage in Juba in September 2012. With participants from Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Tanzania, Seychelles, South Sudan and Uganda, the forum provided an excellent opportunity for sharing ideas and experiences.

Discussions focused on updating and identifying the most significant cultural and natural sites of international importance for possible nomination in the near future, while those countries without tentative lists were assisted to start the preparation process.

The event was hosted by the Ministry of Culture and funded by the African World Heritage Fund and Dutch National Commission for UNESCO.
