Flash Flood Risk Management Awareness Campaign in Aswan, Egypt
UNESCO Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab States organized 2-day workshop on Launching Community Awareness Campaign Program to reduce vulnerability and alleviate and manage risks during and after flash floods for Wadi Abou Sbeira, Aswan during the period 12-13 October 2016. This workshop was organized within the celebration of the International Day for Disaster Reduction and within the framework of the UNESCO Japanese Fund-In-Trust (JFIT) Project titled “Urgent Capacity Development for Managing Natural Disaster Risks of Flash Floods in Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Yemen”. The workshop was opened by H.E. Mr. Magdy Hegazi, Governor of Aswan, with active participation of all local authorities and local communities involved in the management of Flash floods of Abou Sbiera. The outputs of the technical studies of the project was presented and thoroughly discussed through interactive discussion sessions with the local authorities and stakeholders. The workshop was attended by more than 120 persons, including governmental officers, civil defense, civil society, religious leaders, school teachers, students, local leaders, farmers and public living in the village of Nag Al Arab (in the delta of Wadi Abou) suffering from the flash floods of the wadi. The second day included a field visit to the village to share with the local community the awareness materials including the flyers and thematic posters. The workshop was well covered by national and local media. The efforts of UNESCO and support of the government of Japan were highly acknowledged by all participants .
