Policy and Sustainable Development

UNESCO is working with Arab countries to develop or review national STI policies.  On a regional level, UNESCO and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) are spearheading efforts to adopt and implement the Arab Plan of Action for Science and Technology.

Under the plan, a network of centers of excellence in the Arab world will be set up.  These centers will work together on joint research projects to facilitate cooperation and thereby strengthen scientific ties and mobility within the Arab world.  The plan also includes a collaborative research programme to engage many of the Arab scientists who are living and working farther afield.

To ensure the plan receives the necessary support, a funding mechanism is to be set up.  ALECSO will prepare a progress report in time for the second Arab economic and social development summit in 2011.  This is to ensure that the plan is being implemented satisfactorily.

An Arab observatory of science and technology will also been set up.  The goal is to monitor progress in research and development (R&D) and the application of research results to problem-solving in Arab society.  Four priority areas for R&D have been identified which are:

  • Water
  • Energy
  • Agriculture
