On Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 April, UNESCO Brussels Office, Visitbrussels, Flagey and many other partners, jazzed up the capital of the European Union with concerts, workshops and exhibitions running throughout the whole week end of International Jazz Day!

Each year on April 30, jazz is celebrated for its role in promoting peace and uniting people in all corners of the globe. Belgium has a nurtured jazz tradition. It is a country that gave birth to several popular jazz players and compositors. Therefore the overall objective of the International Jazz Day Brussels 2017, was to contribute to the effort made by institutions, cultural actors and civil society, with regards to the promotion of cultural pluralism and participation in the Brussels’ cultural and social life.

For the first time in 2017, UNESCO Brussels, Visitbrussels, Flagey and local organizations joined efforts to coordinate an exciting programme with activities for all. The Brussels jazz week end was highlighted by two events:

On Saturday, events were held to commemorate a great musical hero, Toots Thielemans, born in Brussels on April 29, 1922, and who passed away last August. Toots played a fundamental role in the jazz universe, touching the souls of many with his memorable music. Therefore, Saturday on his 95th birthday and the day before International Jazz Day, events were held throughout Brussels to celebrate his life and music.

Sunday, on the occasion of International Jazz Day, Brussels City Centre, Flagey and Place de St Job transformed themselves into a jazz stage! The extensive programme included street concerts, jazz band battles, workshops, STIB-MIVB transport playing jazz on the metro, and an exclusive concert by Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra feat. Dwight Trible at Flagey to close off the celebrations.
