Young people (including Nkuebe Peete) and teachers from Angola, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland were given cameras, took photos and wrote short texts on two themes: “Young people, sexuality and HIV” and “Let’s listen to students and teachers affected by HIV and AIDS”.
Many of the photos are strikingly beautiful, and the texts are very moving, in particular those that show the stigma suffered by young people and teachers who are HIV-positive. They also convey a powerful message of hope.
The project “Building Knowledge, Skills and Hope: HIV and AIDS Education for African Children” is funded by the Virginio Bruni Tedeschi Foundation which since 2008 has supported activities implemented by UNESCO and its partners in Angola, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland. The project aims to increase access to quality education on HIV and AIDS among young people in educational institutions and to build resilience among learners and teachers who are affected by HIV and AIDS.
The exhibition will run from 1 December 2010 to 14 January 2011 in the Fontenoy building at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
