Regional G-WADI Workshop on “Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources Management in Arid and Semi-Arid Zones” Opens Today in Tehran

A two-day regional workshop of Water and Development Information for Arid Lands – a Global Network (G-WADI) with the main objective to promote better dialogue and understanding of potential climate change impacts on water resources of arid and semi‐arid zones opens today in Tehran. Organised by the Ministry of Energy of Iran and UNESCO Tehran Cluster Office in coordination with the Asian G‐WADI Secretariat, the workshop will also be discussing a new paradigm by rethinking the water use with the aim of increasing the productive use of water.

During the workshop attended by experts from various Asian countries, specific sessions will be allocated to climate change risks and monitoring, by sharing experience of regional countries in the field of climate change adaptation and managing scarce water resources.

The workshop will conclude on 21 June, which will be followed by meeting of the Asian G-WADI Network on June 22nd and a one day field visit to Taleghan-Hashtgerd Asian G-WADI Basin on June 23rd. The Asian G-WADI Meeting will provide a platform for regional participants to discuss and identify new priorities for Asian G-WADI cooperation in the coming years (2012-2013) and onward, especially related to climate change adaptation, monitoring, and mainstreaming integrated approach in local development agenda. (G-WADI) is a UNESCO’s programme established to strengthen the global capacity to manage the water resources of arid and semi-arid areas around the globe through a network of international and regional cooperation. The network promotes regional and international cooperation in arid and semi-arid areas, and aims to build an effective global community through the integration of selected material from networks, centers, organizations, and individuals.
