Turkmenistan joined UNESCO on 17 August 1993. The country is covered by the Tehran Office in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Turkmenistan boasts two sites on the World Heritage List. The first, the Merv State Historical and Culture Park, was inscribed in 1999. It is the oldest and best preserved of the oasis-cities along the Silk Road of Central Asia. The second site, Kunya-Urgench, listed in 2005, is located in northwestern Turkmenistan. The old town contains a series of monuments mainly from the 11th to 16th centuries and was the former capital of the Khorezm region, part of the Achaemenid Empire.

The Repetek Biosphere Reserve, located in the Karakum Desert, is one of the few places where black saxaul forests have been preserved.
