UNESCO invites Brazilian Municipalities to join the Latin American and Caribbean Coalition of Cities Against Racism

UNESCO is one of the partner institutions of the Fourth Meeting of Municipalities with Sustainable Development, which has as its central theme "Reinventing the financing of cities governance", and is promoted by the National Front of Mayors (FNP). UNESCO was present on 25 and 26 April at the Mané Garrincha National Stadium, Brasilia - DF, participating in a panel and presenting the Coalition of Latin American and Caribbean Cities against Racism, Discrimination and Xenophobia.

The presentation of the Coalition took place during the inauguration ceremony of the new FNP board of directors, on April 26, when Porto Alegre Mayor Nelson Marchezan Jr. and the director of the program area of UNESCO Brazil, Marlova Noleto, together with the Uruguayan Social and Human Sciences specialist, Andrés Morales, invited the managers of the Brazilian municipalities to join the Coalition and its Ten-Point Plan of Action.

UNESCO also participated in the debates during the event. In the panel of Innovative Cities, held on April 25, Morales presented the Latin American and Caribbean Coalition of Cities against Racism, Discrimination and Xenophobia as a good practice to promote inclusive policies. "The main objective of the Coalition is to promote the exchange of experiences to promote inclusive local public policies", he said during his speech. At the same time, he stressed the importance the union of cities in the fight against discrimination emphasizing: "it is in the cities where we find racial, gender, sexual and social differences, that is why we need them to combat discrimination".

On April 26, UNESCO invited all Brazilian cities to be part of the Coalition and signed an agreement of understanding so that the National Front of Mayors, an entity that gathers more than five thousand Brazilian municipalities, promotes the Coalition among member cities.
