Jazz Week reaches Cuban schools

Vivir en Jazz is the title of the documentary produced by CINESOFT, the educational TV company of the Cuban Ministry of Education within the framework of the celebration in Cuba of International Jazz Day. The audiovisual, which will be enjoyed by girls and boys in 11,000 schools across the island, describes the history and the evolution of this genre in the country as seen by some of its most outstanding figures.
During the premiere of the documentary, which took place on 26 April at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, CINESOFT director, Dr Iván Barreto, expressed his appreciation to UNESCO for having convened the production of a documentary on the history of jazz in Cuba, a topic that had never been included in Cuba’s educational programme.
“Jazz is also Cuba and with this material it will be entering Cuban schools”, declared Barreto.
CINESOFT’s director explained that the documentary seeks to highlight the contribution of Cuban music to the development of Jazz as a music genre of great relevance throughout the world and to awaken the students’ interest in this music genre and its performers.
Likewise, he underscored the contribution of Cuban artists to the video’s production, whose screening in Cuban classrooms will be followed by a film debate on 27 and 28 April, with an observation guide specially prepared for the occasion.
The guide will enable students to make a more in-depth analysis of the content of this work and the formal aspects of its production, an element of great importance for the country, bent on strengthening the media literacy of girls and boys.
During the screening, it was announced that Vivir en Jazz has triggered the preparation of a cycle of audiovisuals on Jazz, in support of the music training received by girls and boys in primary and secondary education.
The premiere counted with the presence of the Director of the UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, Katherine Muller-Marín, the Deputy-Minister of Education of Cuba, Rolando Forneiro, the President of the Cuban National Commission for UNESCO, Oscar León, representatives of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, members of the production team and artists participating in the video’s production.
