On 5 November 2008, the National Commission of the Republic of Moldova for UNESCO inaugurated the UNESCO Information and Documentation Centre at the Central Scientific Library ‘Andrei Lupan’ of the Moldavian Academy of Sciences in Chisinau. The Centre has been established in the framework of the 45th anniversary of the Library, with the financial support of UNESCO’s Office in Moscow.
In his address during the inauguration ceremony, Mr Artur Cozma, Minister of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Moldova and Chairman of the Moldavian National Commission for UNESCO, noted that UNESCO was putting a greater emphasis on providing universal access to information which could directly contribute to the economic growth.
The newly opened UNESCO Center will focus on:
An exhibition of books granted by the UNESCO Office in Moscow was organized within the inauguration ceremony. It was attended by more than 300 guests, including representatives of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, the Academy of Sciences, NGO’s and the media. Archive and library specialists from Moldova, Romania and Ukraine also participated in the event.
The newly opened UNESCO Center will focus on:
- providing information on UNESCO’s activities;
- collecting UNESCO’s publications both in print and electronic format;
- assuring access to UNESCO’s web portal; and
- conducting roundtables and seminars within UNESCO’s field of competence.
