In-depth look at indicators to measure SDG4 progress

In-depth look at indicators to measure SDG4 progress

Indicators are critical to developing sound evidence-based policies as they help countries monitor and assess progress toward the objectives of education programmes and identify challenges. They are likewise indispensable when it comes to countries’ efforts to monitor progress toward the SDG4-Education 2030 Agenda.

This document offers standardised metadata for each of the 43 indicators proposed to monitor SDG4, offering: definitions, calculation methods, data sources, availability of disaggregation, and limitations for monitoring the SDG4-Education 2030 Agenda.

Among the 43 indicators proposed to monitor SDG4, 11 were chosen to serve as global indicators by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on Sustainable Development Indicators (IAEG-SDG). These global indicators are intended to serve as the primary foundation to track global progress toward the education targets. The remaining thematic indicators are intended to complement the global indicators and to track the education targets in a more comprehensive manner.
