On this day in 1942, Anne Frank received a diary for her 13th birthday. Safeguarded as UNESCO Memory of the World, the "Diary of Anne Frank" is today one of the world's most powerful voices about the fight for human dignity, and the rejection of all forms of racism http://j.mp/yrgTPK

* If you visit Amsterdam, be sure to see the Diary at the Anne Frank House (http://www.annefrank.org/en/)

Ocean sciences are led by a small number of industrialized countries although collecting data and taking the measure of the ocean’s health is a global priority considering the economic and environmental stakes involved, according to the Global Ocean Science Report, compiled by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The Report advocates increased investment into research and calls for greater international scientific cooperation.

The enormous challenge of climate change calls for integrated solutions, combining the power of education, cultural diversity and the sciences, including indigenous knowledge. And today we have to stand more united than ever to deliver on our firm commitment to fight climate change.
Let's change minds, not the climate.

“I am a very different person ever since I have been able to read and write,” says seventeen-year old Fardowsa Bile Abdullahi from Mogadishu, Somalia. “My family trusts me with their business since I am able to calculate money and do the business transaction, as result of the knowledge I gained at the centre.”

The facility is expected to boost research and scientific cooperation in the Middle East across inter-regional divides. It is also designed to help stem the brain-drain and to attract many of the region’s brightest young talents to pursue higher education in the sciences, thereby contributing to the development of a knowledge-based economy.

Culture isn't merchandise: it embodies history and has a symbolic value for the local people.
Conflict situations and natural disasters increase the risk of theft and trafficking dramatically. Too many instances of plunder, theft and trafficking of cultural objects go unseen or unsolved. The theft, pillage and illicit trade in artefacts are the outright negation of peoples. They reduce history to the level of merchandise. They are seriously detrimental, and often irreversibly so, to the collective memory, social cohesion and mutual enrichment.
📣 Spread the message and help stop illicit trafficking of cultural property! 🚫

Keep an eye out for these red flags 🚩 🚩 🚩:
- Is there dirt on it?
- Does it seem like a broken fragment of a larger artifact?
- Is there a reference number painted on its base that looks like it's from a museum?
- Does its price seem too good to be true?
- Can the seller provide you with the object’s provenance paperwork?

Eight sites demonstrating the great diversity of our planet’s geology have received the UNESCO Global Geopark label on 5 May. UNESCO Global Geoparks are territories that promote geodiversity through community-led initiatives to enhance regional sustainable development. They help monitor and promote awareness of climate change and natural disasters and many of them help local communities prepare disaster mitigation strategies.
