Fast-Track To Zero Discrimination: Bangkok 10 Km Run (Sunday 16 October)

UN member states have committed to urgently accelerating efforts towards ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030, but that is only possible if the global community ensures that no-one is left behind. Stigma and discrimination pose significant barriers to equal access to effective HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for key populations.

Thailand has made immense progress in its AIDS response but stigma and discrimination remain an important challenge. Health authorities and community groups are implementing an innovative stigma-reduction programme in public hospitals, but it is important to raise awareness among the general public.

UNAIDS has a partnership with the event company Amazing Field, which specializes in organizing marathons and runs throughout Thailand. The company was behind the highly popular UN Day Run, which attracted around 10,000 runners. Last year, UNAIDS and Amazing Field collaborated on the first Bangkok 10 km International Run. This year, UNAIDS and Amazing Field are working together on the second edition of the run on Sunday 16 October.

UNAIDS is seeking partners to participate in the Bangkok 10 km International Run and support ending the AIDS epidemic by eliminating HIV-related stigma and discrimination by 2020.

Objectives

The Bangkok 10 km run has the following objectives:

1. Raising awareness among the public of stigma and discrimination towards people

living with HIV and key populations

2. Building solidarity by having everyone who supports zero discrimination wear a red ribbon and possibly a wrist or head band and participate in a social media campaign around Fast-Track to Zero Discrimination

3. Challenging stereotypes by organizing a team of runners of people living with HIV and key populations

4. Selling 1000 run registrations and raising funds for stigma-reduction campaign projects in Thailand including video portraits of people living with HIV and a photography exhibit on transgender people

Bangkok 10 km International Run

The Bangkok 10 km International Run will take place on Sunday 16 October, starting at 5:30 am and ending at 8:30 am. The route begins and ends in front of the UN Building on Rjadamnern Nok avenue and passes along the shady streets of old Bangkok.

The regular registration fee is 400 THB and runners receive either a running singlet or Tshirt, along with their running bib.

All runners who register through UNAIDS will be donating their registration fee to stigma reduction projects in Thailand and will receive T-shirts and singlets with a red ribbon and possibly a wrist/head band.

There is a stage which is animated throughout the event in front of the UN building.

UNAIDS and partners will have access to two booths, which are 3m by 3m.

Partnership Requests

UNAIDS believes the Bangkok 10 km International Run is a great venue to raise awareness among the general public as up to 10 000 runners are expected to participate.

Unlike many other AIDS-related events, this one will be attracting many people who are not familiar with HIV or stigma and discrimination. It is a perfect place to reach out to people who have not already been sensitized to key issues.

We are seeking the following:

● Support in spreading the word about the run and registering runners

● Support in raising funds for stigma reduction projects

● Support in sponsoring runners from key populations, including people living with HIV

● Support in raising awareness of stigma towards key populations by supporting a social media campaign

Gold Partners

● Partners who register through UNAIDS more than 100 runners and/or

● Partners who donate more than 50,000 THB

Receive: Logo on stage backdrop, banners at race start/finish and representative invited on stage for thank you presentation of plaque, informational materials at UNAIDS partner booth, team photo shared on social media, logo on stigma-reduction video project

Silver Partners

● Partners who register through UNAIDS 50-100 runners and/or

● Partners who donate 20,000-49,000 THB

Receive: Logo on banners at race start/finish, organization receives thank you mention during run animation, informational materials at UNAIDS partner booth, team photo shared on social media, organizational name in thank you credit in stigma-reduction video project

Bronze Partners

● Partners who register through UNAIDS 10-50 runners or community groups lacking funds but are able to put together a team of 4-10 runners (UNAIDS will look for ways to partially or completely cover the registration fees) and/or

● Partners who donate 10,000-19,000 THB

Receive: Informational materials at UNAIDS partner booth, team photo shared on social media, organizational name in thank you credit in stigma-reduction video project

Timeline

July 22: Race Registration through UNAIDS opens

August 22: Registration packets are available at UNAIDS office

August 31: Silver and Gold partners have made their commitments

October 16: Bangkok 10 km Run
