Consultative Meeting on the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in Northeast Asia

The Consultative Meeting on the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions in Northeast Asia will be held from 20 to 22 June 2017, in Qingdao, China. This meeting is jointly organized by UNESCO Beijing Office, the Secretariat of the UNESCO 2005 Convention and the National Commission of the People’s Republic of China for UNESCO.
The meeting will gather some 50 participants from both governmental and civil society organizations, including delegates from the Northeast Asia sub-region, representatives from other Parties and non-Parties to the Convention from the Asia/Pacific region, as well as national experts from the local host country specialized in cultural policies and the creative sector.
Recognizing that cultural and creative industries are crucial for the sustainable development of societies, the overall objectives are to provide a platform for inter-governmental communication, regional cooperation, experience sharing and presentation of innovative policies and good practices in the implementation of the 2005 Convention.
With the guidance of an international professional from the 2005 Convention Expert Facility, this meeting aims to stimulate informed and effective dialogue among countries in Northeast Asia, sharing case studies and good practices on evidence-based policy making for the promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions. This meeting also intends to increase awareness of the benefits of the 2005 Convention and its implementation among the participants representing Parties and non-Parties to the Convention from the Asia/Pacific Region.
It is expected that the meeting will strengthen human and institutional capacities of national authorities on an informed policy-making process, monitoring and reporting on the diversity of cultural expressions; promote the understanding of the principles of the 2005 Convention among and beyond countries of the Northeast Asia sub-region, including non-State Parties; and create networks of key stakeholders, including civil society, that play a central role in nurturing the diversity of cultural expressions in the Asia/Pacific region for further information-sharing and dialogue on cultural policy and governance of culture.
