To mark this year’s Mine Awareness Day, the National Regulatory Authority for the UXO/Mine Action Sector (NRA) and UNDP organized a celebration in Khammouane province.
The 1st of August is a significant date for Lao PDR – the most bombed country per capita in the world. The day marks the anniversary of the Entry into Force of the Convention on Cluster Munitions, and 2019 commemorates its ninth anniversary. The Convention is an international treaty that prohibits the production, use, transfer and storage of these any form of cluster munition. To commemorate the anniversary, the Government of Lao PDR, UNDP, development partners and other Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) sector stakeholders came together at an event organised at the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.
UNDP Lao PDR's Disaster Risk Management Advisor, Ross Hardy talks about how disasters can present opportunities to people affected by the floods of 2018.
The Government of Australia has increased its contribution to UXO clearance operations in the areas flooded last year in Attapeu Province in order to ensure the safety of resettled communities dislocated by the floods.

The Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the National Regulatory Authority for UXO/Mine Action Sector in Lao PDR (NRA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held a ceremony to sign a contribution agreement on the ‘Project to Support for UXO Sector in the Lao PDR (2nd phase) (2019-2022/USD 5.5 million)’ on May 14 in Vientiane.
