“By 2030, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development”

Under Target 4.7, Indicators 4.7.4 encompasses the “percentage of students by age group (or education level) showing adequate understanding of issues relating to global citizenship and sustainability” and Indicator 4.7.5 encompasses the “percentage of 15-year-old students showing proficiency in knowledge of environmental science and geoscience”.

For the first of these, the 2019 International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) will generate reliable and comparative data, which can inform decision-making and help monitor progress towards the implementation of Target 4.7. For the second learning outcomes indicator, many technical issues remain, including the identification of suitable new data sources and the development of questions to assess the level of knowledge of young people in these fields.

The experts in this Task Force are working on defining a common measure for the two outcome indicators for Target 4.7.
