On this day in 1867, Polish and naturalized-French scientist Marie Curie was born in Warsaw. Today we pay tribute to this woman who passionately dedicated her life to scientific research. Largely known for her work in the radioactivity field, it is important to recall that Marie Curie was the first woman ever to receive the Nobel Prize, the first person and only woman to win twice, the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two different sciences, as well as the first woman to lecture at the Sorbonne University in Paris.

Marie Curie will always be an inspiring example to all women wishing to pursue a career in science. Today let us remember Marie Curie and let us remember that the World still needs more women in science.

To mark this anniversary, we would like to invite you to read the articles published in The Unesco Courier on the 100th anniversary of Marie Curie’s birthday. http://on.unesco.org/2tmMr21

2 November is International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
Perhaps you didn't realize, but journalists' lives are being threatened in a regular basis in many places around the world.
Even worse, most crimes against journalist remain unresolved. 9 in 10 cases, to be more precise. This has to change.
Justice is a cornerstone of a free society. It dissuades those who threaten freedom of expression and emboldens those who stand to defend it. This is why injustice against journalists is so costly for all societies. From 2006 to 2016, no less than 930 journalists were killed. In 2016 alone, we saw the loss of 102 journalists in the line of duty. What makes these figures even more unbearable is that in only one out of ten cases, the perpetrators are brought to justice.
Today, raise your voice, join our call and say out loud: let's #EndImpunity for crimes against journalists!
