Les connaissances et technologies traditionnelles liées à la culture et à la transformation de la curagua englobent toute une série de pratiques qui portent sur la façon de cultiver cette plante et d’en extraire les fibres blanches, qui se caractérisent par leur solidité, leur durabilité et leur douceur. Les fibres sont tissées en fils pour fabriquer toute une gamme d’objets artisanaux, comme des hamacs, l’emblème traditionnel de la région. Ce sont généralement les hommes qui extraient et préparent les fibres de curagua, car ces activités exigent une grande force. Les femmes se chargent ensuite du tissage et de la fabrication des produits artisanaux. La pratique joue un rôle important dans le façonnage de l’identité des communautés vivant dans la municipalité d’Aguasay. Elle fonctionne comme un mécanisme de cohésion sociale qui transcende les barrières de genre, d’origine ethnique ou socio-culturelle. Elle favorise diverses formes de coopération au sein des communautés et entre elles et les structures familiales, dans lesquelles les femmes assument un rôle important dans le travail créatif et la génération de revenus pour la famille. Les connaissances et les savoir-faire sont transmis d’une génération à l’autre, principalement à travers la tradition orale ainsi que par l’observation et l’imitation parmi les membres d’une même famille.
