From out of school to ‘miracle’ student: ICT breaks barriers for migrant learner

Chit Ko is a 13-year-old Burmese migrant who, just two years ago, seemed destined to join the millions of out-of-school children in Southeast Asia. His parents were struggling to make a living after settling in Mae Sot along the Thai-Myanmar border and they wanted Chit Ko to leave school and start work.

They changed their minds and now, thanks to ICT and mobile learning, a new world has opened up to Chit Ko. In 2016, he obtained the first rank in the Myanmar Non-Formal Primary Education programme of Kayin State. He studies at one of 60 learning centres that has been utilizing ICT devices provided through the Mobile Literacy for Out-of-School Children initiative, supported by UNESCO Bangkok, Microsoft, True Corporation, CP Group and Ministry of Education Thailand. He is one of six students benefiting from the project who received the highest scores in the state on the exam.
