Facing Emergencies

We must dedicate special attention to the most fragile societies on the frontlines of climate change, natural disasters and social transformations, as well as conflict. In turbulent times, we must work to strengthen the resilience of individuals and societies, through their capacity to adapt and face the unpredictable, making the most of change.
This is why I have taken steps to reinforce UNESCO’s action in and through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. In the sciences, this includes early warning systems to better anticipate risks and hazards, especially in the least developed countries, the Small Island developing States, as well as for crisis and transition countries.
No single actor can tackle these challenges alone – and this is why UNESCO is strengthening its strategy for partnerships, with the private sector, civil society, media agencies and many other key actors.
I am also determined to sharpening UNESCO’s ability to act where needs are most acute – through a stronger network of field offices and an Organization-wide focus on delivery that is fit for purpose.
