Support to Strengthen Mozambiques SOP on Tsunami Warning and Emergency Response
IOTIC implemented a project activity in Mozambique supported by Malaysian Funds-in-Trust: “Fostering Tsunami Preparedness, Response and Mitigation in the Indian Ocean Small Island Developing States and Developing Countries”. The goal of this project is to strengthen the capacity of Indian Ocean Member States in tsunami preparedness and response to the tsunami early warning.

School Safety Advocacy Workshop: Development of VISUS Application in Indonesia
This workshop was organized by the Disaster Risk Reduction and Tsunami Information Unit (DRRTIU) of UNESCO Office Jakarta on 7 April 2016 and was supported by Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction (GFDRR) and UK Aid through the Challenge Fund Project known as “VISUS (Visual Inspection for defining the Safety Upgrading Strategies) Adaptation in Indonesia through Application Development and Integration to INASAFE”.

Disaster Risk Reduction and Tsunami Information Unit (DRRTIU) and Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) in UNESCO Office Jakarta in coordination with the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Local Disaster Management Office (BPBD) of Maluku Province and Ambon City organized a training workshop on the formulation of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on tsunami early warning chain for Maluku Province and Ambon City, 9-12 February 2016.

Disaster Risk Reduction and Tsunami Information Unit (DRRTIU) of UNESCO Office Jakarta, jointly with the Geological Museum of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, organized a Consensus Building Workshop on Revitalization of Aceh Tsunami Museum in Le Meridien Hotel Jakarta on 12 October 2015. This workshop was supported by the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

Remembering the 1945 Makran Tsunami on its 70th Anniversary, 28 November 2015
Upon the 70th commemoration of the 1945 Makran Tsunami, the countries, namely India, Iran, Oman and Pakistan, are organizing special events on the November 28, 2015. Events such as exhibitions, workshops, meetings, and International Conferences will be held in respective countries, focusing on improving public awareness of the risks of Tsunamis. Tsunami Awareness and Preparedness project were conducted as well as Panels that are developed and produced in Urdu, Farsi, Arabic and English language.

Assessment and Consensus Building on Revitalization of Aceh Tsunami Museum
UNESCO in partnership with the Geological Museum of Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, with the support from the Australian Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), are conducting assessment and Consensus Building in Banda Aceh and Jakarta from 7 to 12 October 2015. This activity receive technical support and assistance from Geosciences Australia, University of Tsukuba, Kobe Earthquake Museum of DRI, and Timmer and Meijer Amsterdam.

Lesson Learnt from the Regional Workshop in Refining the Tsunami Policy Support and Exercise Modules
The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System of IOC UNESCO (ICG/IOTWS) and IOTIC organized a Regional Workshop on Training Modules for Tsunami Exercises Policy Support in Jakarta, 15 to 17 June 2015. The workshop is the final activity under the Project “Enhancing Tsunami Risk Assessment and Management, Strengthening Policy Support and Developing Guidelines for Tsunami Exercises in Indian Ocean Countries” funded by the UNESCAP.

Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre Term of Reference in Muscat, Oman, 24-26 March
The Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre’s Term of Reference got the endorsement from the Indian Ocean member states at the 10th Session of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/IOTWS-X) which was held in Muscat, Oman, 24-26 March. The 10th session of ICG/IOTWS was hosted by the Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) of the Sultanate of Oman.

IOC-UNESCO announces the publication of Remembering the 1945 Makran Tsunami – Interviews with Survivors Beside the Arabian Sea. This booklet captures nearly 100 accounts of the 1945 Makran disaster as told by eye-witnesses and second-generation survivors in Pakistan, Iran, Oman and India. The publication is in English and versions in Farsi, Urdu, and Arabic will be available later in 2015.

10 years since Dec 26, 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami
The December 26, 2004 magnitude 9.1 Sumatra, Indonesia earthquake (3.316 N, 95.854 E, depth 30 km) generated a gigantic tsunami that was observed worldwide and caused tremendous devastation and deaths throughout the Indian Ocean region. The earthquake, the third largest since 1900, caused severe damage and casualties northern Sumatra, Indonesia, and in the Nicobar Islands, India.

UNESCO Supports to the 10th Commemoration of Aceh Tsunami
UNESCO Office Jakarta supported the 10th Commemoration of Aceh Tsunami by donating tsunami education and preparedness materials at the Aceh Tsunami Museum (ATM) and the Stranded Electrical Generator Boat (PLTD-1) Museum. In addition, along with other four UN agencies UNESCO opened an exhibition booth at the Global Disaster Expo organized by the Provincial Government of Aceh on 25-28 December 2014 in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

Indian Ocean-wide Tsunami Exercise to Test Readiness Ten Years After the 2004 Disaster
UNESCO Media Advisory No. 2014-22. Ten years after the strongest tsunami in living memory in 2004, 24 countries of the Indian Ocean Rim will participate in a large scale simulation exercise organized under the auspices of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO on 9 and 10 September to test the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System.
Call for Abstracts: Reducing Tsunami Risk in the Western Indian Ocean
Reducing Tsunami Risk in the Western Indian Ocean is a regional conference in Muscat, Oman. The conference which will be held on 22-23 March 2015 is jointly organised by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and Oman Directorate General of Meteorology, Public Authority for Civil Aviation. Abstracts deadline is 30 September 2014.

Oman National Multi Hazard Early Warning System 2nd Workshop on SOP for Tsunami Early Warning System
The Directorate General of Meteorology and Air Navigation/Public Authority for Civil Aviation of Oman (DGMAN/PACA) in collaboration with IOC UNESCO held the second Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) Workshop for Tsunami Early Warning Systems in Muscat, Oman, June 8-9 2014.
UNESCO Office Jakarta, through Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre (IOTIC) – IOC UNESCO, collaborates with BMKG, BNPB, LIPI, and ITB to implement a project activity funded by Indonesian Fund in Trust (IFIT). The main objective of this project is to build a pilot model of village or town with tsunami early warning chain to support their disaster risk reduction.
