Celebration of International Day of Peace in Burundi

On 23 September 2017, the UNESCO House for a Culture of Peace in Burundi, the United Nations System, in collaboration with the Government of Burundi and seven youth organizations working for peacebuilding, celebrated the International Day of Peace at the Kamenge Youth Center in Bujumbura, Burundi

The theme chosen this year was "Youth committed to development, guarantee for peace and security for all".

The selection of the Kamenge Youth Center to host these ceremonies was based on its traditional role as a junction that brought together the Burundian youth in their diversity during the difficult trials endured by their country.

Special emphasis was placed on young people, who represent more than 65% of the Burundian population. Full of energy they are likely to take part in constructive or destructive activities.

In a youth methodology targeted at other youth on the issue of peacebuilding, four local radios have been called upon to broadcast live the four-hour ceremonies organized in two stages: exchanges between young people in conference rooms, an eight-minute documentary film about youth activities in the framework of the Peacebuilding Project (PBF III), and a musical concert combined with twenty-one peace messages composed and presented by young people to the entire Burundian population.

Beyond these ceremonies of the day, four local radio stations and two television stations broadcasted the views of young people gathered in peace associations on the meaning of "Peace", their recommendations to secure lasting peace in Burundi, as well as their own contribution to make it happen. These opinions were collected in seven provinces of the country and broadcasted through the local media, most of which had online programs.

It should be noted that the celebration of the International Day of Peace, 2017 Edition, falls within the framework of the 2017-2018 Action plan of the Communication Integrated Group of the United Nations in Burundi, which has handled the entire organization, both conceptual and technical.
