Job title: Intern for Communication and Information Unit (CI) – UNESCO Office in Jakarta (Non-remunerated position)

Duty Station: Jakarta, Indonesia

Starting Date: Rolling basis (next availability starting on 10 October 2017)
Duration of Internship: A minimum of 3 (three) months

 

Background

UNESCO is the United Nations organization with the specialized mandate to promote freedom of expression as well as its corollary press freedom and access to information. UNESCO operationalizes this mandate through its Communication and Information programme including advocacy, awareness-raising campaigns, supporting capacity building and media policy guidance in order to promote an enabling environment for freedom of expression, press freedom and journalistic safety, facilitating pluralism and participation in media,  supporting sustainable and independent media institutions as well as to build inclusive knowledge societies by facilitating universal access to information and knowledge using ICTs.


Duties and Responsibilities 

Under the overall authority of the Director of UNESCO Office in Jakarta and the direct supervision of the Advisor for Communication and Information (ACI) of the UNESCO Office in Jakarta, the Intern will support the work of the UNESCO through preforming the following tasks:

  • Assist the Communication and Information (CI) Unit in preparation of briefings, reports, background research, speeches, strategy documents, press releases and feature stories for dissemination on UNESCO’s website.;
  • Provide administrative and technical support in planning and organization of meetings/seminars/conferences especially in conjunction with World Radio Day (13 February), World Press Freedom Day (3 May), International Day for Universal Access to Information (28 September), and the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (2 November) including the drafting of concept notes, programme agenda, coordinating logistics (travel and accommodation of participants), drafting various official letters, and provide updates for use on UNESCO’s website and social media;
  • Contribute to the development of new project proposals in the general area of fostering freedom of expression and building knowledge society to be presented to the potential donors;
  • Undertake any other relevant professional tasks which may be required by the Director or the ACI of UNESCO Office in Jakarta;
  • Submit a report reflecting the internship at UNESCO Office in Jakarta at the end of the contract period. 

WORKING DAYS AND WORK SCHEDULE

Five working days, from Monday to Friday, or 40 (forty) hours per week with the working hours from 08:00 to 17:00 hours and one-hour break, from 12:00 to 13:00 hours. Interns are also entitled to 2.5 days off per month.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicants must currently be enrolled in a graduate or post-graduate (Masters) degree programme in a university or equivalent institution, at the time of application;
  • Students should be undertaking studies in areas related to communications, information and communication technology, international studies, human rights, and preferably with a background in journalism.
  • Good interpersonal skills and has willingness to learn;
  • Good attention to detail, multi-tasking, and organizational skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills (fluency in Bahasa Indonesia is a strength);
  • Computer literacy (ability to use design software is a strength);
  • Good with social media tools
