Description
Batroun est un petit port situé sur la mer dont les maisons anciennes (une grande partie figure sur la Liste Officielle Libanaise des Monuments Classés et Inscrits Monuments Historiques et Sites) organisées autour d'étroites ruelles constituent un exemple de l'architecture traditionnelle libanaise.
Il y a, en outre, les vestiges d'un amphithéâtre romain dont les gradins sont taillés dans le rocher. Des fouilles archéologiques récentes ont degagé une nécropole (sarcophages) et des mosaïques byzantines. D'autres vestiges représentatifs des occupations successives (vestiges de l'époque phénicienne, château médiéval situé sur un terrain en cours d'expropriation, etc.) font de Batroun un témoin important de l'histoire du Liban.
A quelques kilomètres au Nord de Batroun, le château médiéval de Mseileha construit sur un piton rocheux est assez impressionant. Les terrains alentours font actuellement l'objet d'une procédure d'expropriation.
