Three education institutions win prize for boosting effectiveness of teachers

Education institutions in Pakistan, The Dominican Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo are the winners of the 2010 UNESCO-Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Teachers.

The prize, set up in 2009 and funded by his Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum of Dubai, was awarded to the Ali Institute of Education (Pakistan), the Center of Excellence for Teacher Training (Dominican Republic) and the Centre Congolais Education pour Tous (Democratic Republic of the Congo). The value of the award is US$ 270,000 which will be divided between the three winners. 

Every two years, the prize rewards three candidates from around the world who have shown outstanding achievement in enhancing the performance and effectiveness of teachers in developing countries or within marginalized or disadvantaged communities from the wider global context.  

The prize aims to support, encourage and benefit those working to enhance the performance and effectiveness of teachers towards Education for All. It attaches particular importance to outstanding practices in developing countries. It also aims to facilitate the global sharing and dissemination of outstanding practices regarding teachers.  

An international jury made its pre-selection in Dubai in December 2009. The prize giving ceremony will be held in Dubai on 27 April when the Director-General of UNESCO Ms Irina Bokova will attend.
